EMS Squad
The members of the Emergency Medical Service Squad do not participate in extinguishing fires. Their main responsibility is helping the sick or injured residents of our community. The EMS Squad also tends to any of the firefighters if they are injured at a fire. Rescue
The members of Rescue are firefighters. They respond to firefighting alarms, such as house fires, building fires, and car accidents. They also assist the EMS Squad when someone is sick or injured and in need of an ambulance. Rescue members are trained in special areas, like confined space rescue and vehicle extrication. Emergency Company 1 is located at the Sherman Van Ness Fire Station, 154 Uniondale Avenue, between Front Street and Hempstead Turnpike. Emergency Company 1 is divided into two parts, Rescue and EMS Squad. Protection Company is located on the corner of Uniondale Avenue and Lafayette Street. Company 4 is a ladder company, which is also known as a truck company. They have a tower ladder truck, an aerial truck, and a special service vehicle, which is used to transport members and carry specialty equipment.
Protection Company responds to firefighting alarms. Their job is to search for victims in a fire, locate the fire, and relay the information to the Chief. They are also responsible for doing overhaul, which means opening up walls and ceilings to check for fire extension and proper extinguishment. Company 4 also trained with the Rescue Company in rope rescue and elevator emergencie Manor Engine Company 3 The primary function of an engine company is fire suppression and extinguishment. They are also trained to help both the Rescue Company and Ladder Company in their operations if the situation demands it. Engine company responds to all firefighting alarms, such as building fires, car accidents, brush fires and others. Manor is located at the Sherman Van Ness Fire Station with Emergency Company. They have two pumpers. They also have a unique mini pumper known as “Little Squirt,” which is used as a quick response vehicle for car accidents and small rubbish or brush fires. The primary function of an engine company is fire suppression and extinguishment. They are also trained to help both the Rescue Company and the Ladder Company in their operations if the situation demands it. Engine Company responds to all firefighting alarms, such as building fires, car accidents, brush fires, and others.
Brookside is located on Park Avenue, between Uniondale Avenue and Davis Avenue. They are known as the “Pride of Park Avenue.” Written by: Uniondale Fire Department The Uniondale Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1924. It consisted of one Rescue company, one Ladder company and two engine companies. An E.M.S. squad was added in the 1990’s.
The Uniondale Fire District protects a diverse residential as well as commercial community. Some examples of our protection area are Hofstra University, Nassau Community College, Nassau Coliseum, parts of the Meadowbrook parkway and the Southern State parkway and the EAB Plaza just to name a few. The Uniondale Volunteer Fire Department department consists of over 110 members and a host of fire fighting, rescue and medical equipment. We operate 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. We responded to over 1400 emergency calls last year alone. |
